RBI Starts Realisation Stage for Linking India’s UPI with Eurosystem’s TIPS for Smooth Cross-Border Transfers

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has moved into the realisation phase to connect India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) platform run by the Eurosystem, aiming to streamline cross-border payments.
  • UPI, created by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is India’s instant payment framework enabling seamless P2P and P2M transactions using smartphones and bank accounts.
  • TIPS, operated by the European Central Bank, is a real-time settlement mechanism that enables instant euro-denominated transfers within the Eurozone, offering round-the-clock service with under-10-second transaction time.
  • The UPI–TIPS linkage is expected to deliver quicker, low-cost, and transparent money transfers between India and the Euro Area, decreasing reliance on SWIFT and reducing involvement of intermediary banks.
  • This integration will benefit NRIs, businesses, and traders by providing predictable fees and quicker turnaround times for cross-border remittances and commercial payments.
  • The initiative enhances India’s global fintech presence and aligns with the G20 vision of improving cross-border payment systems.
  • RBI and NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL) will collaborate with the European Central Bank on technical connectivity, risk frameworks, settlement processes, and harmonisation of regulatory requirements like KYC, AML, and data protection standards.
  • TIPS was launched in November 2018 by the European Central Bank.

Punjab SC Commission Launches India’s First Exclusive Courtroom for Scheduled Caste-Related Cases

  • The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has unveiled the nation’s first courtroom dedicated solely to matters concerning members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, marking a significant step toward enhancing judicial accessibility.
  • Commission Chairperson Jasvir Singh Garhi highlighted that the state-of-the-art courtroom will ensure speedy hearings, faster resolution of cases, and improved efficiency in safeguarding SC rights.
  • An Online Court System will soon be introduced, enabling complainants to join proceedings virtually—helping save travel time, cost, and effort, especially for individuals from distant or rural regions.
  • The specialized courtroom addresses persistent issues of case delays and backlogs, thereby strengthening the justice delivery mechanism for marginalized groups and reaffirming the state’s commitment to equality and constitutional protections.
  • This marks the first such facility under any state-level SC Commission in India and is expected to inspire similar initiatives in other states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Participates in G20 Summit in Johannesburg

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa—his 12th G20 Summit appearance since 2014.
  • This event became historic as it was the first G20 Summit conducted on African soil, reflecting the increasing influence of the Global South in international governance.
  • During the session on “Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth Leaving No One Behind,” PM Modi praised South Africa’s efforts in areas including skilled migration, tourism, food security, digital economy, artificial intelligence, innovation, and the empowerment of women.

Major Proposals Presented by India at the G20 Summit

  1. G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository – To preserve traditional wisdom and make it accessible for future generations.
  2. G20 Africa Skills Multiplier – An initiative to train one million certified trainers for African youth, promoting long-term capacity building.
  3. G20 Global Healthcare Response Team – A team of experts from all G20 nations to be mobilized during global health crises.
  4. G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership – To provide developing nations with satellite data for agriculture, fisheries, and disaster response.
  5. G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative – Focused on recycling, urban mining, innovation, and building stable supply chains of critical minerals.
  6. G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus – A collective effort to fight drug trafficking and curb terror financing.
  • PM Modi also spoke in a session titled “A Resilient World – Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Just Energy Transition, Food Systems”, emphasizing that disaster mitigation should be development-oriented, drawing attention to India’s Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).
  • This Summit is the fourth G20 gathering hosted in the Global South consecutively. The 2025 theme is “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.”
  • The visit marks PM Modi’s fourth official trip to South Africa, following prior visits for the BRICS Summits (2018, 2023) and a bilateral visit in 2016.

India and Israel Agree to Begin Free Trade Agreement Negotiations
