National News

Voluntary HUID-Based Silver Hallmarking Introduced

  • Beginning September 1, 2025, silver jewellery in India will be brought under the voluntary HUID-based hallmarking system, ensuring greater purity verification and traceability for buyers.
  • The revised BIS standard IS 2112:2025 introduces additional purity grades and simplifies the hallmarking process with a digital Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) code.
  • This initiative aligns silver hallmarking with the existing gold hallmarking system, strengthens consumer protection, and will be facilitated by 230+ BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres across the country.

Phase-II of PSA Mumbai Terminal Inaugurated

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong virtually launched Phase-II of the PSA Mumbai Terminal at JN Port, Navi Mumbai, now recognized as India’s largest container terminal with a 4.8 million TEUs capacity.
  • The terminal is equipped with modern cranes and a direct rail connection to the Dedicated Freight Corridor, setting a global benchmark in port infrastructure.
  • Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that the upcoming Wadhwan port will elevate Maharashtra into the world’s top 10 port hubs, reinforcing its leadership in maritime trade.

Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) Rules Under NPS

  • The Central Government has officially notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) rules under the National Pension System (NPS) for central government employees.
  • The Central Civil Services (Implementation of UPS) Rules, 2025 cover enrolment, contributions, switching options, and benefits in cases of retirement, disability, or death.
  • A key feature is the retirement provision after 20 years of service (earlier 25 years).
  • Approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, the scheme became operational on April 1, 2025, offering employees a one-time option to migrate to UPS, marking a major welfare step.

Royal Bhutan Buddhist Temple Opens in Rajgir

  • On September 4, 2025, the Royal Bhutan Buddhist Temple was inaugurated in Rajgir, Bihar, by Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay along with India’s Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.
  • The inauguration was performed through traditional Bhutanese Buddhist rituals, reinforcing Rajgir’s sacred link to Lord Buddha’s life and teachings.
  • The temple not only strengthens India-Bhutan cultural ties but also promotes Buddhist tourism, positioning Buddhism as a diplomatic bridge among Himalayan nations like Bhutan and Nepal.

India’s First Vulture Knowledge Portal

  • On International Vulture Awareness Day (September 2, 2025), India unveiled its first Vulture Knowledge Portal: www.thevulturenetwork.org from Assam.
  • Developed by Gauhati University’s students and researchers, the portal provides scientific research, awareness material, and downloadable campaign resources dedicated to vulture conservation.
  • Supported by We Foundation India and other NGOs, it focuses on tackling threats such as carcass poisoning, use of diclofenac, and negative social perceptions of vultures.

International News

India-Singapore Defence & Trade Cooperation

  • During PM Lawrence Wong’s maiden visit to India, both nations agreed to enhance defence ties with emphasis on technology co-development and joint production, though no binding deals were signed.
  • Bilateral talks also covered trade relations, with India stressing the need to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) due to its growing trade deficit.
  • As both countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, leaders reaffirmed strategic alignment under India’s Act East Policy and committed to strengthening investment, CECA review, and cultural exchange.

Nepal Prohibits 26 Social Media Platforms

  • The Government of Nepal has enforced a ban on 26 unregistered social media platforms, including global giants like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube, Viber, and Botim.
  • This follows a Supreme Court directive mandating that no platform can operate without official registration in Nepal.
  • The announcement was made by Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister of Communications and IT, aiming to ensure digital accountability and compliance.

Banking News

Aadhaar Authentication Surges in August 2025

  • The UIDAI registered over 221 crore Aadhaar authentication transactions in August 2025, reflecting its expanding role in India’s digital governance and economy.
  • Among these, 18.6 crore transactions were conducted using AI-driven face authentication technology, ensuring secure and user-friendly identity verification.
  • The IT Ministry underlined Aadhaar’s importance in direct welfare delivery and its growing role in facilitating access to public and private services.

UPI Transaction Limits Raised

  • From September 15, 2025, the NPCI has raised UPI transaction limits for select sectors such as capital markets, insurance, government e-Marketplace, credit card bill payments, and collections.
  • The new per-transaction cap is ₹5 lakh, while the daily aggregate limit stands at ₹10 lakh for verified merchants in these categories, replacing earlier limits of ₹1–2 lakh.
  • However, peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions remain capped at ₹1 lakh per day.
  • This move enhances ease of large-value digital transactions and reduces the need to split payments, benefiting both consumers and businesses.

Anand V. Patil to Receive Prof. V.K. Gokak Award

  • Anand V. Patil, an acclaimed writer and recipient of the Bal Sahitya Award from Kendra Sahitya Akademi, will be presented the Prof. V.K. Gokak Award on September 7, 2025, in Bengaluru.
  • Organized by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in association with the Vinayaka Gokak Vangmaya Trust, the award commemorates Prof. Vinayaka Krishna Gokak, a Jnanpith laureate and strong advocate of Kannada language promotion.

India Develops Rare Anti-Doping Material

  • India’s NIPER Guwahati in collaboration with the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) has synthesized a rare high-purity Reference Material (RM) named Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite (LTM).
  • The RM helps in detecting long-term use of Methandienone, a banned anabolic steroid, thereby improving accuracy of doping tests.
  • Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the RM, noting it as part of India’s 22 rare RM projects.
  • The innovation will be distributed to WADA-accredited laboratories globally, strengthening anti-doping frameworks and fair play in sports.

Chandrayaan-5: India-Japan Pact for Lunar South Pole

  • India and Japan signed an implementing agreement to collaborate on exploring the Moon’s south pole under Chandrayaan-5.
  • The mission, also known as the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) Mission, will study volatile substances like water ice on the lunar surface.
  • The spacecraft will be launched aboard JAXA’s H3-24L rocket, carrying an Indian-built lander and a Japan-made rover.
  • The agreement was formalized during PM Modi’s official visit to Japan, strengthening ISRO–JAXA space cooperation.

PRATUSH Mission Proposed by RRI

  • The Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, in collaboration with ISRO, has proposed the PRATUSH Mission (Probing ReionizATion of the Universe using Signal from Hydrogen).
  • This project plans to set up a radio telescope on the Moon’s far side to study the Cosmic Dawn and the era of reionization.
  • The telescope will operate in the 30–250 MHz frequency range, with advanced components like a frequency-independent antenna, self-calibratable analog receiver, and high-resolution digital correlator (100 kHz).
  • Designed for a 2-year operational lifespan, it will monitor large sky regions, recording radio emission spectra with high signal clarity.
  • The mission aims to reveal how the first stars shaped the Universe and may lead to discoveries of new physics.
