⚡ Quick Facts & Exam Traps

Must-Know Days for Exams
  • National Science Day (Feb 28): Commemorates C. V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect (1928) — NOT his birthday. Nobel Prize followed in 1930.
  • International Day of Yoga (Jun 21): Proposed by PM Modi; declared by UN in December 2014; first observed June 21, 2015. June 21 = Summer Solstice (longest day in Northern Hemisphere).
  • Gandhi Jayanti / Non-Violence Day (Oct 2): Gandhi’s birthday (1869); UN declared it the International Day of Non-Violence in 2007.
  • National Unity Day (Oct 31): Sardar Patel’s birthday (1875); instituted in 2014; marks his role integrating 562 princely states.
  • Constitution Day (Nov 26): Constitution ADOPTED by Constituent Assembly (1949). Republic Day (Jan 26) = Constitution CAME INTO FORCE (1950).
⚠️ Common Exam Traps — National & International Days

Trap 1 — Two Teachers’ Days: India’s Teachers’ Day = September 5 (Dr. S. Radhakrishnan’s birthday, 1888). World Teachers’ Day (UNESCO) = October 5. These are on different dates — a classic exam trap.

Trap 2 — Two Children’s Days: India’s Children’s Day = November 14 (Nehru’s birthday). Universal Children’s Day (UN) = November 20. Again, different dates.

Trap 3 — Republic Day vs Constitution Day: Nov 26 = Constitution ADOPTED (1949). Jan 26 = Constitution IN FORCE (1950) = Republic Day. One is adoption, the other is enforcement.

Trap 4 — National Science Day: Feb 28 marks the Raman Effect discovery (1928) — it is NOT C. V. Raman’s birthday. The birthday-based rule has this important exception.

📝 Key Notes & Memory Tips

Note 1 — India vs UN: Days on Different Dates

Several themes have BOTH an Indian national day AND a separate UN/international day on different dates — a classic exam trap: Teachers’ Day India = Sep 5 (Radhakrishnan’s birthday) vs World Teachers’ Day = Oct 5 (UNESCO, 1994). Children’s Day India = Nov 14 (Nehru’s birthday) vs Universal Children’s Day = Nov 20 (UN). Hindi Diwas = Sep 14 (Constitution adoption of Hindi, 1949) vs World Hindi Day = Jan 10 (first World Hindi Conference, 1975). Constitution Day = Nov 26 (Adopted, 1949) vs Republic Day = Jan 26 (In Force, 1950).

Note 2 — Birthday-Based National Days

Most of India’s national observances are tied to famous birthdays: Jan 12 = National Youth Day (Swami Vivekananda, 1863). Jul 1 = National Doctors’ Day (Bidhan Chandra Roy, 1882). Aug 29 = National Sports Day (Major Dhyan Chand, 1905). Sep 5 = Teachers’ Day (Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, 1888). Oct 15 = World Students’ Day (APJ Abdul Kalam, 1931). Oct 31 = National Unity Day (Sardar Patel, 1875). Nov 11 = National Education Day (Maulana Azad, 1888). Nov 14 = Children’s Day (Nehru, 1889). Dec 22 = National Mathematics Day (Ramanujan, 1887). Dec 23 = Kisan Diwas (Chaudhary Charan Singh, 1902). Dec 25 = Good Governance Day (Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 1924). Exception: Feb 28 = National Science Day marks Raman’s discovery (1928), NOT his birthday.

Note 3 — India’s Military/Defence Days

Army Day = Jan 15 (Cariappa became first Indian C-in-C, 1949). National Technology Day = May 11 (Pokhran II, 1998). Kargil Vijay Diwas = Jul 26 (1999 victory). Independence Day = Aug 15 (1947). Air Force Day = Oct 8 (IAF established, 1932). Vijay Diwas = Dec 16 (1971 victory over Pakistan). Navy Day = Dec 4 (Operation Trident, 1971). Armed Forces Flag Day = Dec 7 (since 1949).

Note 4 — UN Days with Year of Declaration (Tested in Current Affairs)

International Day of Yoga — proposed by PM Modi to UN General Assembly, September 2014; UN declared December 2014; first observed June 21, 2015. International Day of Non-Violence (Gandhi Jayanti) — UN declared 2007. World Tsunami Awareness Day (Nov 5) — UN declared 2015. World Toilet Day (Nov 19) — UN declared 2013. International Day of the Girl Child (Oct 11) — UN declared 2011. World Autism Awareness Day (Apr 2) — UN declared 2007. Questions in current affairs GK often ask the year a day was first declared or first observed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs \u2014 National & International Days
What is the difference between national days and international days?

National days are declared and observed by individual countries to commemorate events or personalities of national significance — for example, India’s Independence Day (August 15), Republic Day (January 26), and Teachers’ Day (September 5). International days are declared by the United Nations or specialised UN agencies (WHO, UNESCO, FAO, ILO) to raise global awareness on specific issues — for example, World Environment Day (June 5, UN) or World Health Day (April 7, WHO). Some days are observed nationally in India AND internationally on the same or different dates.

Which national/international days are most frequently tested in competitive exams?

The highest-frequency days in UPSC, SSC, and Banking exams include: Republic Day (Jan 26), National Youth Day (Jan 12 — Vivekananda), National Science Day (Feb 28 — Raman Effect), International Women’s Day (March 8), Earth Day (April 22), National Technology Day (May 11 — Pokhran II), International Day of Yoga (June 21), Independence Day (Aug 15), Teachers’ Day (Sept 5 — Radhakrishnan), Gandhi Jayanti/Non-Violence Day (Oct 2), National Unity Day (Oct 31 — Sardar Patel), Children’s Day (Nov 14 — Nehru), Constitution Day (Nov 26), Human Rights Day (Dec 10), and National Mathematics Day (Dec 22 — Ramanujan).

How many important days does October have and why is it significant?

October is one of the most GK-dense months for national and international days. Key dates include: October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti / International Day of Non-Violence), October 5 (World Teachers’ Day), October 8 (Indian Air Force Day), October 10 (World Mental Health Day), October 16 (World Food Day), October 24 (United Nations Day), and October 31 (National Unity Day — Sardar Patel’s birthday). The UN’s founding (October 24, 1945) and Gandhi’s birthday make October particularly significant for international affairs GK.

Which important days in India are based on the birthdays of national figures?

Several of India’s national observances are directly tied to famous birthdays: January 12 = National Youth Day (Swami Vivekananda, 1863); July 1 = National Doctors’ Day (Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, 1882); August 29 = National Sports Day (Major Dhyan Chand, 1905); September 5 = Teachers’ Day (Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, 1888); October 15 = World Students’ Day (APJ Abdul Kalam, 1931); October 31 = National Unity Day (Sardar Patel, 1875); November 11 = National Education Day (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, 1888); November 14 = Children’s Day (Jawaharlal Nehru, 1889); December 22 = National Mathematics Day (Srinivasa Ramanujan, 1887); December 23 = Kisan Diwas (Chaudhary Charan Singh, 1902); December 25 = Good Governance Day (Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 1924).
