NITI Aayog Automotive GVC Report — India’s 2030 Targets

Economy

What: NITI Aayog released its second Global Value Chain (GVC) report on the Automotive Industry, highlighting India’s position as the world’s 4th largest automobile producer. The sector contributes 7.1% to India’s overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounts for 49% of India’s manufacturing GDP. India’s current automotive component trade stands at USD 20 billion, representing a 3% share of global trade.

How: The report outlines a roadmap for India to scale up by deepening integration into global automotive supply chains — covering components, electric vehicles (EVs), and advanced manufacturing. The 2030 targets set by the report are USD 145 billion in total automotive production and USD 60 billion in exports. Achieving these requires investment in R&D, skill development, EV battery ecosystems, and trade facilitation under agreements like the India–UAE CEPA and AI-ECTA.

Why: This report is highly relevant for UPSC GS-III (industrial policy, manufacturing, Make in India) and Banking/Economy exams. Key MCQ anchors: India’s global rank (4th largest producer), GDP contribution (7.1%), share in manufacturing GDP (49%), current trade value (USD 20 bn / 3% global share), and 2030 targets (USD 145 bn production, USD 60 bn exports). GVC integration is an emerging theme in UPSC Mains Economic Survey questions.

IICT — India’s First AVGC-XR Institute at Film City, Mumbai

Frontier Tech

What: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MoI&B), the Government of Maharashtra, and the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Ltd (MFSCDCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) at Film City, Goregaon, Mumbai. IICT will be India’s first dedicated Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) institute.

How: The equity structure of IICT is: Government of India (34%), Government of Maharashtra (14%), and industry bodies FICCI + CII jointly (52%). The Government of India will provide a grant of Rs 391.15 crore. The institute will be set up on a 10-acre plot at Film City under a 30-year lease. It aims to create a skilled talent pipeline for India’s rapidly growing AVGC-XR sector, which is a priority under the National AVGC-XR Mission (launched 2023).

Why: AVGC-XR is a stated priority sector in India’s Union Budgets and Digital India framework. The IICT is relevant for UPSC GS-III (creative economy, digital sector policy) and is a strong MCQ topic given its ‘first in India’ status. Key facts to retain: AVGC-XR full form, IICT location (Film City, Goregaon), equity split (GoI 34%, Maharashtra 14%, FICCI+CII 52%), and GoI grant (Rs 391.15 cr).

ISSF World Cup 2025 — India Finishes 2nd in Buenos Aires

Sports

What: India finished 2nd at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2025, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina (April 1–11), winning a total of 8 medals — 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze. China topped the medal tally with 11 medals. Vijayveer Sidhu became the first Indian to win gold in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. Rudrankksh Patil claimed gold in Men’s 10m Air Rifle with a score of 252.9 points.

How: The ISSF World Cup serves as a major qualifying and ranking event for the Olympic shooting programme. India’s strong performance across pistol and rifle events reflects the depth developed through the national shooting academy system and Sports Authority of India (SAI) support programmes. Vijayveer Sidhu’s gold is historically significant as the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol is one of the most technically demanding shooting disciplines.

Why: Shooting medals and ISSF events are standard content in Sports GK sections of Banking, SSC, and State PSC exams. Key facts: ISSF World Cup 2025 location (Buenos Aires), India’s tally (8 medals: 4G-2S-2B), overall rank (2nd), China (1st, 11 medals), Vijayveer Sidhu (1st Indian gold in 25m Rapid Fire Pistol), Rudrankksh Patil (10m Air Rifle, 252.9 pts). Sidhu’s ‘first Indian’ distinction is the strongest MCQ trigger here.

🧠 Mini-Quiz: Test Your Recall

3 questions from today’s one-liners. No peeking!

1

According to NITI Aayog’s 2nd Automotive GVC Report, what is India’s current rank as an automobile producer globally, and what is its target for total production by 2030?

Correct Answer: C — India is the 4th largest automobile producer globally, with a 2030 production target of USD 145 billion. Option A gets the rank wrong (3rd). Option B gets the rank wrong (5th). Option D is a trap — USD 60 billion is the 2030 export target, not the production target. Keeping these two figures distinct (USD 145 bn production vs USD 60 bn exports) is critical for exam accuracy.
2

India’s first AVGC-XR institute, IICT, will be set up at Film City, Mumbai. What is the equity share of the Government of India in this institute?

Correct Answer: C — The Government of India holds 34% equity in IICT. Option A (52%) is the combined share of industry bodies FICCI and CII — the majority stakeholder. Option B (14%) belongs to the Government of Maharashtra. Option D (50%) is a round-number trap with no basis in the MoU. The unusual structure — where industry (52%) holds more equity than the central government (34%) — is itself a notable exam point.
3

At ISSF World Cup 2025 in Buenos Aires, Vijayveer Sidhu won India’s first-ever gold in which shooting event?

Correct Answer: D — Vijayveer Sidhu won the first Indian gold in Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol. Option A (10m Air Pistol) and Option B (10m Air Rifle) are deliberate traps using events from the same competition — Rudrankksh Patil won gold in Men’s 10m Air Rifle (252.9 pts), not Sidhu. Option C (50m Rifle 3 Positions) is a real ISSF event but unrelated to either gold medal here. Mixing Sidhu and Patil’s events is the most common error candidates make.

President Murmu’s State Visits — Portugal & Slovakia

International

What: President Droupadi Murmu undertook state visits to Portugal (April 7–8) and Slovakia (April 9–10). In Portugal, she received the City Key of Honour from Lisbon and the countries marked 50 years of diplomatic relations with commemorative stamps. In Slovakia, she received an Honorary Doctorate from Constantine the Philosopher University, Nitra, and was presented with the first-ever Slovak translation of the Upanishads. India and Slovakia signed 2 bilateral MoUs.

How: The Portugal visit strengthened ties in areas of trade, technology, and the Indian diaspora (a significant Portuguese-speaking community links both nations via Goa’s colonial history). The Slovakia visit deepened Central European partnerships — Slovakia is an EU and NATO member, and the Honorary Doctorate and Upanishads translation highlighted India’s soft power through classical knowledge traditions. Both visits were part of India’s broader European diplomatic outreach in 2025.

Why: Presidential state visits with named honours, universities, and ‘firsts’ (first Slovak Upanishads translation) are standard MCQ material in Banking and SSC awareness sections. Key facts: Portugal — City Key of Honour, Lisbon, 50-year diplomatic stamps; Slovakia — Honorary Doctorate, Constantine the Philosopher University (Nitra), first Slovak Upanishads translation, 2 MoUs signed. The Upanishads connection also serves as a UPSC Mains soft power / cultural diplomacy anchor.

PM POSHAN Cost Revision — May 2025

Digital Governance

What: The Ministry of Education (MoE) announced a 9.5% hike in the material cost norms under the PM POSHAN (Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman) scheme, effective May 1, 2025. The revised rates are: Primary (Grades 1–5) — Rs 6.78 per student per day (up from Rs 6.19); Upper Primary (Grades 6–8) — Rs 10.17 per student per day (up from Rs 9.29). The total FY26 budget allocation for PM POSHAN is Rs 12,500 crore, with the cost revision adding Rs 954 crore in additional expenditure.

How: PM POSHAN (formerly the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, renamed in 2021) provides hot cooked meals to students in government and government-aided schools to improve enrolment, retention, and nutritional outcomes among children. The scheme covers approximately 11.8 crore students across 11.2 lakh schools nationwide. The cost revision reflects inflationary pressures on food commodities and is periodically revised to maintain meal quality standards.

Why: PM POSHAN is a flagship welfare scheme examined across UPSC GS-II (social sector, education policy, nutrition) and Banking/SSC awareness. Key facts: old and new per-student rates (Primary: Rs 6.19 → Rs 6.78; Upper Primary: Rs 9.29 → Rs 10.17), hike percentage (9.5%), effective date (May 1, 2025), FY26 budget (Rs 12,500 cr), and additional cost (Rs 954 cr). The scheme was renamed from Mid-Day Meal to PM POSHAN in 2021 — a frequently tested transition.

PM Modi’s Varanasi Infrastructure Push — Rs 3,880 Crore

Digital Governance

What: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple infrastructure projects worth over Rs 3,880 crore in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Key projects include a road bridge connecting Ring Road to Sarnath, multiple flyovers, the NH-31 underpass tunnel (Rs 980 crore), and 400/220 kV power substations (Rs 1,045 crore). PM Modi also visited Anandpur Dham in Madhya Pradesh during the same visit.

How: The NH-31 underpass tunnel addresses chronic traffic congestion at one of Varanasi’s key arterial junctions, while the 400/220 kV substations will significantly boost power transmission capacity for eastern Uttar Pradesh — a region with historically high power demand and deficit. These projects are part of the broader PM GatiShakti National Master Plan for integrated multimodal infrastructure development.

Why: Infrastructure inaugurations with specific cost figures and project types appear in Banking, SSC, and State PSC (especially UP PSC) GK sections. Key facts: total outlay (Rs 3,880+ cr), NH-31 underpass tunnel (Rs 980 cr), power substations 400/220 kV (Rs 1,045 cr), location (Varanasi, UP). The combination of road, tunnel, and power infrastructure under PM GatiShakti makes this a multi-sectoral GS-III anchor for UPSC as well.
