Setubandha Scholar Scheme Launched

Digital Governance

What: The Education Ministry’s Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) division at Central Sanskrit University launched the Setubandha Scholar Scheme to integrate Gurukul-trained Shastra scholars into IIT research roles. The scheme offers fellowships up to ₹65,000 per month along with research grants up to ₹2 lakh annually for eligible candidates under 32 years of age with at least five years of Gurukul education.

How: The scheme creates a “bridge” (Setu) between traditional knowledge systems and modern scientific research by placing scholars trained in ancient Indian texts within premier technical institutions. This facilitates cross-disciplinary research where traditional insights can inform contemporary scientific enquiry.

Why: This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on integrating Indian Knowledge Systems into mainstream education. Questions on NEP 2020, IKS initiatives, and schemes promoting traditional knowledge are frequently asked in UPSC Prelims and State PSC examinations under the Education and Culture sections.

India-UAE Maritime Security Agreement

Defence & Geopolitics

What: India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a Maritime Security and Safety Cooperation Agreement during the 13th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting held in New Delhi. The agreement covers Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, maritime law enforcement, pollution response, and joint training between the two coast guards.

How: The agreement institutionalises cooperation mechanisms between the Indian Coast Guard and UAE Coast Guard for coordinated patrols, information sharing on maritime threats, joint exercises, and capacity building in areas like oil spill response and anti-smuggling operations in the Arabian Sea and Gulf region.

Why: India-UAE relations have been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, making bilateral agreements highly exam-relevant. This agreement strengthens India’s maritime security architecture in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Questions on India’s maritime partnerships, IOR security, and bilateral defence agreements are common in UPSC GS-II (International Relations).

Kaziranga’s First Grassland Bird Census

Environment

What: Kaziranga National Park in Assam conducted India’s first-ever grassland bird census from March to May 2025 using acoustic monitoring technology. The census recorded 43 bird species, including the critically endangered Finn’s Weaver, providing baseline data for grassland habitat conservation.

How: Unlike traditional visual surveys, acoustic monitoring uses specialised equipment to record bird calls, allowing identification of species even in dense grasslands where visual detection is difficult. This method provides more comprehensive species counts and can detect nocturnal and secretive species often missed in conventional surveys.

Why: Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for the one-horned rhinoceros, but its grassland ecosystem supports diverse avifauna. The census methodology and findings are significant for biodiversity conservation questions. Topics on Kaziranga, endemic species like Finn’s Weaver, and conservation techniques appear regularly in UPSC Environment & Ecology sections.

INS Satpura at SIMBEX-25

Defence & Geopolitics

What: INS Satpura, a Shivalik-class stealth frigate, arrived in Singapore for SIMBEX-25, the 32nd edition of the Singapore–India Maritime Bilateral Exercise. The exercise began with harbour-phase engagements including Subject Matter Expert (SME) exchanges and tactical discussions to enhance interoperability between the two navies.

How: SIMBEX exercises typically progress from harbour phase (planning, briefings, sports exchanges) to a sea phase involving anti-submarine warfare drills, surface warfare exercises, helicopter operations, and communication procedures. The exercise strengthens tactical coordination and standard operating procedures between participating naval units.

Why: SIMBEX is one of India’s longest-running bilateral naval exercises and reflects the Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR vision. Questions on India’s naval exercises, their frequency, participating countries, and strategic significance are regularly asked in defence and international relations sections of competitive exams.

CSIR Validates India’s First Monofloral Lavender Honey

Science & Research

What: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) Pulwama station in Jammu & Kashmir scientifically validated India’s first monofloral lavender honey under the CSIR Floriculture Mission. Monofloral honey is produced predominantly from the nectar of a single plant species, giving it distinct characteristics.

How: Scientific validation involves analysing the honey’s pollen content, chemical composition, and sensory properties to confirm its lavender origin. The CSIR Floriculture Mission promotes lavender cultivation in J&K, creating livelihood opportunities while developing high-value products like essential oils and speciality honey.

Why: This development supports sustainable farming, rural enterprise, and functional food innovation in the Union Territory. Questions on CSIR initiatives, the Floriculture Mission, and J&K’s economic development through agriculture are relevant for UPSC GS-III (Agriculture) and State PSC exams covering regional development schemes.

India’s Gini Score of 25.5 – Income Equality Indicator

Economy

What: India has reportedly achieved a Gini coefficient of 25.5, ranking it among the most income-equal countries globally. The Gini coefficient measures income inequality on a scale of 0 (perfect equality) to 100 (perfect inequality). This improvement is attributed to welfare delivery through schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

How: The DBT architecture directly transfers subsidies to beneficiary bank accounts, reducing leakages. PMGKAY provides free food grains to 80 crore beneficiaries, while Ayushman Bharat offers health coverage to vulnerable families—collectively compressing income disparities at the lower end of the distribution.

Why: While the Gini improvement is significant, wealth gaps and opportunity access remain concerns. Understanding economic indicators like Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, and welfare scheme impacts is essential for UPSC GS-III (Indian Economy) and banking exams. Questions often link these concepts to poverty alleviation and inclusive growth.
