India–Oman CEPA Comes into Force

Economy

What: The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Oman entered into force on June 1, 2026. It covers 98.08% of India’s exports (by value) and 99.38% of tariff lines, making it one of the most comprehensive trade pacts India has signed with a Gulf nation. Oman’s total import market is approximately USD 28 billion.

How: Under the agreement, India gains market access across 127 services sub-sectors. Business visitors can stay up to 90 days; Intra-Corporate Transferees (ICTs) up to 4 years; and Independent Professionals up to 180 days. Prior to CEPA, only 15.33% of India’s exports to Oman enjoyed duty-free access under Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status. The agreement was presented by Union Minister Piyush Goyal of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).

Why: CEPAs and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are frequently tested in UPSC Prelims and State PSC exams under Economy and International Relations. Key data points — 98.08% export coverage, 127 services sub-sectors, and the MFN baseline of 15.33% — are direct one-liner exam facts. This is also India’s first CEPA with a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member.

MAHA Water Mission Launched by MoJS & ANRF

Science & Research

What: MAHA (Missions for Advancement in High-Impact Areas) Water Mission is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), established under the ANRF Act 2023. It carries a total outlay of Rs 200 crore over five years, with support of up to Rs 20 crore per research consortium.

How: The mission funds research consortia working across five key themes: (1) Water Resource Assessment & Sustainable Management, (2) Drinking Water, (3) Water Quality & Ecological Health, (4) Water Use Efficiency & Circular Economy, and (5) Climate Resilience & Adaptation. ANRF acts as the apex science funding body, channelling interdisciplinary research grants to institutions.

Why: Water security is a recurring topic in UPSC GS-III (Science & Technology, Environment) and GS-II (Government Schemes). ANRF itself — constituted under the ANRF Act 2023, modelled on the US National Science Foundation — is a frequently tested institution. The five mission themes align directly with India’s Jal Jeevan Mission goals and SDG-6 (Clean Water & Sanitation).

RBI Annual Report 2025-26: Key Highlights

Economy

What: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its Annual Report for 2025-26. The RBI’s balance sheet expanded by 20.6% (Rs 15.72 lakh crore) to reach Rs 91.97 lakh crore as of March 31, 2026. Domestic investments rose 44.9%, gold holdings surged 63.8%, and foreign investments grew 7.9%. The Contingency Fund (CF) provision stood at Rs 1.09 lakh crore.

How: On bank fraud, the report noted that while the total fraud amount jumped 46% to Rs 48,021 crore (up from Rs 32,803 crore the previous year), the number of fraud cases actually fell sharply — from 23,722 to 10,114 — indicating larger but fewer frauds. The report is published under Section 53(2) of the RBI Act, 1934.

Why: RBI Annual Report data is a standard source for UPSC Prelims Economy questions. Key figures — balance sheet size, percentage growth, CF provision, and fraud statistics — are direct MCQ fodder. The counter-intuitive fraud trend (amount up, cases down) is a likely trap question. Section 53(2) of the RBI Act is relevant for Polity/Institutional questions.

🧠 Mini-Quiz: Test Your Recall

3 questions from today’s one-liners. No peeking!

1

What percentage of India’s exports (by value) are covered under the India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that came into force on June 1, 2026?

Correct Answer: C — The India–Oman CEPA covers 98.08% of India’s exports by value (and 99.38% of tariff lines — a common distractor). Before CEPA, only 15.33% of India’s exports enjoyed duty-free access under MFN status, making this agreement a transformative shift for bilateral trade.
2

The MAHA Water Mission was jointly launched by which two bodies?

Correct Answer: B — The MAHA (Missions for Advancement in High-Impact Areas) Water Mission is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). ANRF was established under the ANRF Act 2023 as India’s apex body for funding scientific research and innovation.
3

According to the RBI Annual Report 2025-26, what happened to bank fraud cases and the total fraud amount compared to the previous year?

Correct Answer: C — This is a classic trap question. While the number of fraud cases fell sharply from 23,722 to 10,114, the total fraud amount surged 46% to Rs 48,021 crore (from Rs 32,803 crore). This indicates fewer but larger frauds — a key analytical point for Mains answers on banking sector health.

Divyastra Mk-1: India’s AI Loitering Munition

Defence & Geopolitics

What: Divyastra Mk-1 is an AI-powered tactical loitering munition (also called a “kamikaze drone”) developed by Indian firm Hoverit. It underwent successful operational trials in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in June 2026. The system combines artificial intelligence with swarm capability for autonomous navigation, target recognition, and coordinated multi-unit strikes.

How: Unlike conventional drones, a loitering munition loiters over a target area and strikes on detecting the target, functioning as both a drone and a guided munition. Swarm technology allows multiple Divyastra units to coordinate autonomously, increasing survivability and strike saturation. The AI module enables target recognition without continuous human input.

Why: Loitering munitions and drone warfare are high-priority topics in UPSC GS-III (Internal Security & Defence Technology) after their extensive use in global conflicts. The development of an indigenous system by an Indian private firm also connects to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) defence manufacturing push, a recurring exam theme. Jodhpur as the trial location connects to India’s western strategic theatre.

BHASHINI–DPIIT MoU: AI for Indian Languages

Digital Governance

What: BHASHINI (BHASHA Interface for India), the national language translation mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The programme — titled BHASHINI Seva/Sanchalan: A BHASHINI Sahayogi Programme — supports all 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

How: The MoU enables DPIIT-affiliated entities (startups, MSMEs, investors) to access BHASHINI’s AI-powered language tools for multilingual business communication and document processing. Key sub-initiatives include BHASHINI Udyat (advanced translation), Mitra (assistive), Appmitra (app integration), and Pravakta (speech synthesis). This allows startups to serve non-English-speaking markets more effectively.

Why: BHASHINI is a common UPSC Science & Technology and Digital India topic. Questions often test: the parent ministry (MeitY), the number of Eighth Schedule languages (22), and the mission’s role in India’s AI-for-Good agenda. The DPIIT connect links BHASHINI to the startup ecosystem — bridging GS-II (Governance) and GS-III (Economy & Technology) preparation.

Mesalina bishnoi: New Lizard Species in India

Environment

What: Scientists at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) recorded the first confirmed presence of the genus Mesalina in India, naming the new species Mesalina bishnoi. The arid-adapted lacertid lizard was discovered near Gajner in Bikaner district, Rajasthan, during field surveys in August 2025. The species has a snout-to-vent length of approximately 39.2 mm.

How: ZSI researchers conducted morphological and genetic analyses to confirm the species as distinct from known Mesalina found in West Asia and North Africa. The species was named after the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan, known for centuries of wildlife and environmental conservation — particularly their reverence for the khejri tree and blackbuck. The findings were published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Why: New species discoveries by ZSI are a staple of UPSC Prelims Environment section, especially those involving naming after communities or landmarks. The Bishnoi community is itself a frequently mentioned group in environmental ethics questions (Chipko movement context, tree-hugging tradition). Bikaner/Thar Desert as an arid biodiversity hotspot and the role of ZSI in taxonomy are both examinable angles.
