University of Liverpool Bengaluru: India’s First Russell Group Campus

Digital Governance

What: The University Grants Commission (UGC) — established in 1956 under the UGC Act and functioning under the Ministry of Education — handed a Letter of Approval to the University of Liverpool for its Bengaluru campus. UGC Chairman Dr. Vineet Joshi handed over the letter at a ceremony attended by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and UK Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper. The campus will be located at Alembic City, Whitefield, Bengaluru, and is expected to be operational by August–September 2026.

How: The campus will offer undergraduate programmes in Business Management, Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences, Accounting & Finance, and Game Design, alongside postgraduate MSc degrees in Computer Science and Accounting & Finance. It targets an enrolment of 10,000 students within a decade. The approval is framed within the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s push for internationalisation of higher education and the India-UK Vision 2035 bilateral strategic framework.

Why: This is the first Russell Group university — a consortium of 24 leading UK research universities — to receive UGC approval for an Indian campus. Questions on NEP 2020 provisions for foreign universities, UGC’s role, and India-UK bilateral education initiatives are standard in UPSC Prelims (Education/Polity) and State PSC exams. The Russell Group tag and NEP 2020 link are key facts for MCQs.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Youngest Player Ever in India Senior Squad

Sports

What: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player ever selected for the Indian senior cricket squad at 15 years and 71 days, breaking the long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar (16 years 205 days). He was named in the T20 International (T20I) squad for India’s tours of Ireland (June 26–28) and England (July 1–11, five T20Is), as well as the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

How: His selection followed a standout Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, where he won the Orange Cap with 776 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad. Shreyas Iyer was named T20I captain (replacing Suryakumar Yadav), with Tilak Varma as vice-captain.

Why: Record-breaking cricket achievements, especially those involving Sachin Tendulkar comparisons, are perennial favourites in Sports GK sections across SSC, Railways, and banking exams. The Asian Games 2026 host city (Aichi-Nagoya, Japan), dates (September 19 – October 4), and India’s squad details are all high-yield current-affairs facts.

Khalilur Rahman Elected President of 81st UNGA Session

International

What: Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, was elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He defeated Cyprus’s candidate Andreas Kakouris in the election and is set to assume office on 8 September 2026. The UNGA, established in 1945 with its headquarters in New York, currently has 193 member states.

How: The UNGA President is elected annually for a one-year term to preside over the General Assembly’s plenary sessions and high-level debates. The 80th UNGA President was Philemon Yang of Cameroon. Each regional group of the UN rotates the presidency; this election reflects the Asia-Pacific group’s turn to field a candidate.

Why: UNGA session numbers, the names of Presidents and their home countries, and the UNGA’s structural facts (193 members, founding year, HQ) are standard MCQ fodder in UPSC Prelims (International Relations) and banking exams. Bangladesh’s growing diplomatic prominence makes this doubly relevant for India-neighbourhood questions.

The Ivy League is an American university grouping; the Red Brick and G5 are other UK groupings not applicable here.
2

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s selection in the Indian senior cricket squad broke whose record of being the youngest player selected?

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Appointed Next VCAS of Indian Air Force

Defence & Geopolitics

What: Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF), with effect from 1 July 2026. He is currently serving as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC), the apex joint-services body coordinating tri-service operations. He was commissioned into the IAF on 6 December 1986 and has accumulated over 3,300 flying hours across more than 20 aircraft types.

How: The VCAS is the second-highest-ranking officer in the IAF, supporting the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) in operational and administrative matters. Dixit’s distinguished career has earned him the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Vayu Sena Medal (VM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) — four of India’s highest military service decorations.

Why: Senior defence appointments, the role of VCAS and CISC, and the meaning of military gallantry/service medals (PVSM, AVSM, etc.) are tested in UPSC Prelims (Defence), NDA, CDS, and AFCAT exams. The distinction between the CISC role and service-specific positions is a nuance often tested in MCQs on India’s military hierarchy.

IMD’s 7th Regional Meteorological Centre Inaugurated at Jammu

Science & Research

What: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) — established in 1875 and operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) — inaugurated its 7th Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Jammu on 5 June 2026. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences. The next (8th) RMC has been announced for Lucknow. The six existing RMCs are located in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Nagpur, and Guwahati.

How: RMCs serve as regional hubs for weather forecasting, data collection, and dissemination within their geographic zones. The Jammu RMC will strengthen weather monitoring and forecasting for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, regions that are both strategically sensitive and climatically challenging. MoES also oversees allied bodies such as the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM, Pune), the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Why: IMD’s founding year, parent ministry, headquarters, and the list of RMC cities are classic static GK questions in SSC CGL, UPSC Prelims, and State PSC exams. The addition of Jammu as the 7th RMC and Lucknow as the upcoming 8th are current-affairs facts that will appear in near-term exams. The broader MoES ecosystem (IITM, INCOIS, NIOT) is also frequently tested.

FIFA World Cup 2026: First 48-Team Edition Across Three Nations

Sports

What: The 2026 FIFA World Cup — the 23rd edition of the tournament — is being jointly hosted by the United States of America (USA), Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It is the first World Cup to feature a 48-team format (expanded from the previous 32-team format), with 104 matches played across 16 venues. The FIFA World Cup trophy undertook a three-day tour of India in June 2026 ahead of the tournament.

How: The expanded format adds a Round of 32 before the knockout stages and increases the number of participating confederations’ slots. The previous edition (FIFA World Cup 2022) was held in Qatar, where Argentina won the title and France’s Kylian Mbappé took the Golden Boot. The joint hosting by three CONCACAF nations is itself a historic first.

Why: FIFA World Cup editions, host nations, format changes, and winners are high-frequency questions in SSC, Railways, and banking exam GK sections. The shift to the 48-team format and the three-nation hosting arrangement are landmark facts. India’s direct connection (trophy tour, growing football awareness) makes this a current-affairs favourite. UPSC candidates should also note the India connection for essay/interview contexts.
