India’s First SME Semiconductor ATMP/OSAT Facility

Frontier Tech

What: India’s first Small and Medium Enterprise (SME)-level semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility has been inaugurated at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. It is set up by M/s Sahasra Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd. with an investment of over Rs 150 crore across a 57,000 sq. ft. facility.

How: The facility has been established under the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), administered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It was inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and marks a key step in India’s semiconductor self-reliance roadmap.

Why: This is significant for UPSC Science & Tech and Economy sections, and for state PCS exams covering industrial policy. It ties into India’s broader semiconductor mission, the India Semiconductor Mission, and the government’s goal to build a domestic chip ecosystem reducing import dependence.

PFRDA’s NPS Post-Retirement Reform: Age Limit & RIS

Economy

What: The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has extended the National Pension System (NPS) account continuation age from 75 to 85 years. It has also introduced Retirement Income Schemes (RIS), which are flexible periodic payout options available during the decumulation (post-retirement withdrawal) phase.

How: Under the existing NPS structure, subscribers can withdraw 60% of their corpus tax-free at retirement, while 40% must be used to purchase an annuity. The new RIS framework adds flexibility in how retirees draw down the remaining corpus, allowing periodic payouts rather than a lump-sum or standard annuity alone. PFRDA is a statutory body established under the PFRDA Act, 2013.

Why: This reform is highly relevant for banking, insurance, and UPSC GS-III (Indian Economy) examinations. Questions on NPS structure, PFRDA’s mandate, tax treatment of pension corpus, and annuity rules are frequently asked in competitive exams.

Mission Sikkim Organics: Rs 360 Crore Scheme

Digital Governance

What: Mission Sikkim Organics is a centrally funded scheme worth Rs 360 crore launched on Sikkim Statehood Day (May 16) by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) under Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. It aims to strengthen Sikkim’s status as India’s first fully organic state.

How: The scheme supports organic farming infrastructure, market linkages, and farmer capacity building in Sikkim. Sikkim became India’s 22nd state through the Constitution (36th Amendment) Act, 1975, integrating it into the Indian Union. The current Chief Minister is Prem Singh Tamang, and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan attended the launch.

Why: This combines polity (constitutional amendments, statehood), agriculture (organic farming policy), and current affairs. It is relevant for UPSC Prelims and Mains (GS-II governance, GS-III agriculture) as well as North East-focused state PCS exams. Sikkim’s organic model is often cited as a global best practice.

PM Modi’s UAE Visit & 5-Nation Tour

International

What: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on May 15, 2026, as part of a 5-nation tour covering UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The visit resulted in major MoUs (Memoranda of Understanding) in energy and strategic sectors, with the UAE committing USD 5 billion in investment to India.

How: Key agreements signed include: ISPRL (Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd.) with ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) for energy security; IOCL (Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.) with ADNOC for LPG supply; and CSL (Cochin Shipyard Ltd.) with DDW for a ship repair cluster at Vadinar, Gujarat. These deals strengthen the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Why: This is directly relevant to UPSC GS-II (India’s foreign policy, bilateral relations) and GS-III (energy security, infrastructure). The India-UAE relationship — covering trade, energy, diaspora, and defence — is a recurring exam theme. The Vadinar ship repair cluster also links to India’s maritime and blue economy push.

India’s First Algae Tree — Bhopal

Environment

What: India’s first Algae Tree has been installed at Swami Vivekananda Park in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Developed by Mushroom World Group, one unit of the Algae Tree is equivalent to the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption capacity of 25 mature trees, absorbing 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per year and producing 1 tonne of oxygen annually.

How: The solar-powered structure uses algae bioreactors to perform photosynthesis at an accelerated rate compared to conventional trees. It achieves a 45–55% reduction in particulate matter within a 15-metre radius. It was inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishwas Sarang and represents an urban green technology solution for air quality improvement.

Why: Relevant for UPSC Environment & Ecology, GS-III (technology for environmental protection), and state PCS exams. It connects to urban pollution mitigation, green technology innovation, and India’s climate commitments under COP agreements. The concept of biomimicry and algae-based solutions is an emerging topic in competitive exam science sections.

Committee on Empowerment of Women 2026–27

Polity

What: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted the Committee on Empowerment of Women for 2026–27, effective April 21, 2026. Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari (Member of Parliament, BJP) has been appointed as its Chairperson. The committee is a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) comprising 30 members — 20 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

How: The committee reviews reports of the National Commission for Women (NCW), advises on matters relating to women’s welfare, education, equality, and political representation, and monitors women-related schemes referred by Parliament. It is reconstituted annually with a maximum tenure of one year. It was first constituted on April 29, 1997, during the 11th Lok Sabha.

Why: This is a high-relevance topic for UPSC GS-II (Parliament, parliamentary committees, women’s governance) and for examinations on social welfare schemes. Understanding the difference between standing committees, JPC, and ad hoc committees, as well as the role of NCW, is frequently tested in Prelims and Mains.
