The Government of India announced that the Population Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases, marking the first inclusion of caste enumeration since Independence.

• Phase I — Commences 1 October 2026 in snow-bound and hilly regions: Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh
• Phase II — Begins 1 March 2027 across the rest of the country

The official notification is expected on 16 June 2025. Census 2021 was deferred due to COVID-19, making Census 2011 the last completed exercise.

India added Khichan (Phalodi) and Menar (Udaipur) wetlands from Rajasthan to the Ramsar List, increasing India’s total Ramsar sites to 91.
