Endangered Species Day — 2026 Theme & Background
Observed on the third Friday of May every year; in 2026: May 15. 2026 theme: ‘Celebrating America’s Wildlife Comeback Stories. Championing the Endangered Species Act.’ Founded in 2006 by David Robinson and the Endangered Species Coalition. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 (USA) is the cornerstone legislation. International celebrations began in 2013. Recognised as a national observance by the US Senate.

PFRDA’s NPS Post-Retirement Reform — Age Limit Extended to 85
PFRDA (statutory body regulating India’s pension sector) introduced a new post-retirement framework via Retirement Income Schemes (RIS) in May 2026. NPS account continuation extended from 75 to 85 years for both government and non-government subscribers. At retirement: up to 60% corpus withdrawn tax-free; minimum 40% must be used to purchase an annuity. Supports corpus appreciation during the decumulation phase.

PM Modi’s UAE Visit — ISPRL-ADNOC MoU & Energy Deals
PM Modi visited UAE on May 15, 2026 (5-nation tour: UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy). Key deal: MoU between ISPRL (Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited) and ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) for strategic energy collaboration. India’s first SME-led semiconductor ATMP/OSAT facility inaugurated at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan in May 2026. Set up by M/s Sahasra Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd. under SPECS (Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors) — a MeitY flagship scheme. ATMP = Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging; OSAT = Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test. Area: 57,000 sq. ft.; investment: Rs 150+ crore. Marks Rajasthan’s entry into India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Emirates NBD – RBL Bank Acquisition Deal
Ministry of Finance approved UAE-based Emirates NBD’s proposal to acquire 49%–74% stake in RBL Bank for USD 3 billion (Rs 26,850 crore) — one of India’s largest FDI deals in banking. Initial stake up to 60% via preferential allotment; open offer for additional 26%. Deal: up to 95.91 crore equity shares at Rs 280/share; signed October 18, 2025; completion expected Q1 FY27. Subject to RBI final approval. RBL Bank will become a wholly-owned foreign bank subsidiary post-deal.

India’s First ‘Algae Tree’ — Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Inaugurated at Swami Vivekananda Park, Bhopal in May 2026 by MP Minister Vishwas Sarang. Developed by Mushroom World Group (2 years of research, 50+ experts). Uses microalgae to absorb CO2 and release oxygen. Per unit: reduces particulate pollution by 45–55% within 15 metres; absorbs 1.5 tons CO2; generates 1 ton oxygen annually — equivalent to 25 mature trees. Fully solar-powered (no grid dependency).

Kami Rita Sherpa — 32nd Everest Ascent, New World Record
Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa (‘Everest Man’) scaled Everest for the 32nd time in May 2026, breaking his own world record (most Everest ascents, male category). First climbed Everest in 1994. Simultaneously, Lhakpa Sherpa (‘Mountain Queen’) scaled Everest for the 11th time (female record). Everest also known as Sagarmatha (Nepali) and Chomolungma (Tibetan); height: 8,849 m. First climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
