PM Modi’s France & Slovakia Visit 2026
InternationalWhat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on 13 June 2026 for a two-nation visit covering France and Slovakia. Key engagements include a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice on 14 June, the G7 (Group of Seven) Summit at Evian-les-Bains on 16–17 June, and the VivaTech technology summit in Paris on 18 June. The Slovakia leg (14–16 June) marks the FIRST-EVER visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia gained independence on 1 January 1993.
How: India and France had elevated their relationship to a Special Global Strategic Partnership in February 2026 during Macron’s India visit, when Macron also co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in New Delhi. The India-France Year of Innovation was simultaneously launched. Modi’s participation in the G7 covers three sessions: Forging New Partnerships & Rebuilding International Solidarity; Reviving Balanced Economic Growth; and Ensuring Safe Rollout of AI.
Why: Diplomatic visits and multilateral summits like the G7 are staple topics in UPSC Prelims and State PSC General Studies. Key facts to anchor: this is Modi’s 7th official France visit, the first Indian PM visit to Slovakia, and India’s G7 session themes (especially the AI session) are highly relevant for both Prelims and Mains GS-II (International Relations).
India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 & Agriculture Conclave
InternationalWhat: India holds the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Chairship for 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This is India’s 4th chairship (previous: 2012, 2016, 2021). BRICS now has 11 members, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Indonesia joining the original five. The 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting was held on 12–13 June 2026 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, chaired by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, concluding with a Joint Declaration.
How: The full BRICS Agriculture Conclave ran from 9–13 June 2026 at Hotel Sheraton Grand Palace, Indore. The Agriculture Working Group (AWG) met from 9–11 June, followed by the ministerial meeting on 12–13 June. Four priority pillars were discussed: Food Security & Nutrition; Agricultural Trade & Cooperation; Climate-Resilient & Sustainable Agriculture; and Innovation & Research Partnerships. The BRICS Agricultural Research Platform was first established during India’s 2016 chairship.
Why: BRICS membership expansion and India’s chairship themes are frequently tested in UPSC Prelims (GS-II International Relations) and Banking/SSC exams. The 11-member count, India’s chairship theme acronym (BRICS = theme keywords), and the Indore venue (MP’s context as “cleanest city”) are high-yield data points for static + current affairs questions.
India’s Current Account Surplus in Q4 FY26
EconomyWhat: India recorded a Current Account surplus of USD 7.1 billion (0.7% of GDP) in Q4 of Financial Year 2025–26, a sharp reversal from the USD 13.2 billion deficit in Q3 FY26. The surplus was driven by strong net services receipts of USD 60.4 billion and record remittances of USD 43.5 billion. The merchandise (goods) trade deficit stood at USD 83.4 billion. The overall Balance of Payments (BoP) recorded a surplus of USD 7.2 billion.
How: India’s services sector — primarily IT/ITeS (Information Technology / IT-enabled Services) and financial services — generates consistent foreign exchange. Remittances from the Indian diaspora, particularly from the Gulf and the United States, hit record levels this quarter. The Current Account is a component of the Balance of Payments and tracks trade in goods, services, income, and current transfers.
Why: Current Account data is a core topic in UPSC Prelims (GS-III Economy) and RBI Grade B exams. Key facts: Q4 FY26 surplus = USD 7.1 bn; Q3 FY26 deficit = USD 13.2 bn (reversal angle); remittances record = USD 43.5 bn. Questions may also test the relationship between Current Account, Capital Account, and Balance of Payments.

West Bengal Joins Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY
Digital GovernanceWhat: On 8 June 2026, West Bengal became the 36th and final State/Union Territory to implement Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), completing the nationwide rollout of the scheme. AB PM-JAY is India’s flagship public health assurance programme that provides cashless hospitalisation coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care.
How: States and UTs join the scheme by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority (NHA), the apex body implementing PM-JAY. West Bengal had previously operated its own state health scheme (Swasthya Sathi) and had been among the last holdouts. With its inclusion, every eligible family across all 28 states and 8 UTs can now access the benefits.
Why: AB PM-JAY is one of the most frequently tested government schemes in UPSC Prelims, SSC, and Banking exams. High-yield facts: launched in September 2018 under Ayushman Bharat Mission; coverage of Rs 5 lakh/family/year; implemented by NHA; West Bengal = 36th State/UT (completing full rollout). Questions often test scheme objectives, nodal ministry (Health & Family Welfare), and coverage figures.
International Day of Yoga 2026
InternationalWhat: The 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) will be observed on 21 June 2026, with the theme “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom, and World Peace.” The United Nations designated 21 June as International Yoga Day through Resolution A/RES/69/131 on 11 December 2014, co-sponsored by a record 177 nations. The first IDY was observed on 21 June 2015. The day is organised by India’s Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy).
How: PM Modi proposed International Yoga Day at the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014. The countdown event, Yoga Mahotsav 2026, was held on 13 March 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, organised by MDNIY (Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga). A “100 Days, 100 Cities, 100 Organisations” initiative was launched alongside. Yoga was inscribed on UNESCO’s ICH (Intangible Cultural Heritage) list in 2016.
Why: IDY is a recurring static-plus-current topic tested across all competitive exams. Theme sequence is a common MCQ format: 2024 — “Yoga for Self and Society”; 2025 — “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”; 2026 — “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom, and World Peace.” Other anchor facts: UN Resolution number (A/RES/69/131), 177 co-sponsoring nations (record), Ministry of AYUSH, and UNESCO ICH inscription year (2016).
FIFA World Cup 2026: Historic Tri-Nation Edition
SportsWhat: The 23rd edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup 2026 is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — the first time in history that three nations have co-hosted the tournament. The field has been expanded from 32 to 48 teams, playing a total of 104 matches. The final is scheduled on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.
How: The tri-nation bid was awarded to North America by FIFA in 2018. The expanded 48-team format, introduced for this edition, features a new group stage structure with 12 groups of 4 teams each. The tournament opened on 11 June 2026. A Group B match between Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina was played on 13 June 2026. The ICC Cricket Chair Jay Shah is unrelated — FIFA President is Gianni Infantino.
Why: World Cup editions, hosts, team counts, and final venues are standard sports current affairs questions in SSC, Banking, UPSC, and State PSC exams. Key facts: 23rd edition; tri-nation hosting (USA + Canada + Mexico) — a historical first; 48 teams (expanded from 32); 104 matches; final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, 19 July 2026. The “first tri-nation hosting” angle is the highest-yield hook for MCQs.
