Mizoram – India’s First Fully Literate State (ULLAS)
Mizoram declared India’s first fully literate state with a 98.2% literacy rate (PLFS 2023-24), exceeding the 95% benchmark set by the Ministry of Education. Under ULLAS (New India Literacy Programme 2022-27), 3,026 illiterates were identified; 1,692 enrolled; 292 volunteer teachers. Declaration made by CM Lalduhoma at Mizoram University, Aizawl.

International Booker Prize 2025 – ‘Heart Lamp’ (Kannada)
Banu Mushtaq (author, Bengaluru) and Deepa Bhasthi (translator) won the International Booker Prize 2025 for ‘Heart Lamp: Selected Stories’ — originally written in Kannada. First Kannada work, first short story collection, and first win by a Muslim woman from India at this prize. Prize money: GBP 50,000 shared equally.

M.R. Srinivasan – Founder-Chairman, NPCIL
M.R. Srinivasan was Founder-Chairman of NPCIL (1987) and Chairman of AEC the same year. Worked with Dr. Homi Bhabha on Apsara — India’s first nuclear reactor (criticality: August 1956). Awarded Padma Vibhushan (2015); founder member of WANO, London.

Pankaj Advani won the CCI Billiards Classic 2025 for the 3rd consecutive time, defeating Dhruv Sitwala 5-2 at Wilson Jones Billiards Hall, Mumbai. Total: 28 IBSF World titles (billiards, snooker & pool) and 36 national titles. Honours: Arjuna (2004), Khel Ratna (2006), Padma Shri (2009), Padma Bhushan (2018).

DPIIT–GEAPP MoU – ENTICE Challenge
DPIIT signed an MoU with GEAPP (New York) to launch the ENTICE (Energy Transitions Innovation Challenge) for climate-tech startups, offering up to USD 500,000 (~₹4 crore) in rewards. Investment support from Spectrum Impact and Avana Capital (both Mumbai-based).

USA overtook UAE to become India’s 4th largest crude supplier at 7.3% of imports (0.33 mbd, doubled YoY). India’s top 3: Russia (37.8%), Iraq (19.1%), Saudi Arabia (10.4%). Post Modi-Trump talks (Feb 2025), India targets US energy imports rising from USD 15B to USD 25B.

CCI Approves Bajaj–Allianz Insurance Deal (₹24,180 Crore)
CCI approved Bajaj Group’s acquisition of Allianz’s stakes in their insurance JV for ₹24,180 crore. On the same day (May 20, 2025), CCI also cleared Nazara Technologies, Temasek–Haldiram Snacks (minority stake), and 360 ONE WAM’s acquisition of Batlivala & Karani Securities.

Dr. Jayant Narlikar – Hoyle–Narlikar Theory
Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar co-developed the Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravity (1963) with Sir Fred Hoyle — integrating Einstein’s relativity with Mach’s principle as an alternative to the Big Bang. Founded IUCAA, Pune (1988); directed it until 2003. Awards: Padma Bhushan (1965), Padma Vibhushan (2004), UNESCO Kalinga Prize (1996), Maharashtra Bhushan (2010).
Skill Development
MSDE Pilot Apprenticeship Scheme for NER Youth
MSDE launched a Pilot NAPS Apprenticeship Scheme for ~26,000 NER youth with an additional stipend of ₹1,500/month for 1 year. Total budget: ₹43.93 crore (including ₹4 crore for outreach). Co-launched in Aizawl, Mizoram by MoS Jayant Chaudhary & CM Lalduhoma. Implementation: IIE Guwahati and NSDC.
