India to Host Asian Open Skating 2025

Short track speed skating is an Olympic winter sport held on a 111.12-meter oval track inside a standard ice rink. Unlike long track speed skating on 400m ovals, short track is fast, intense, and demands sharp turns, quick reflexes, and strong endurance.

Skaters compete in groups rather than individually, making strategy and positioning as important as raw speed. Races feature heats, semifinals, and finals, with events ranging from 222-meter sprints to 5000-meter team relays. The sport has been part of the Winter Olympics since 1992.

Maharana Pratap Sports College in Raipur, Dehradun has been selected as the venue for this historic event. The college has been upgraded with world-class ice rinks, athlete facilities, and spectator seating to meet international standards.

Uttarakhand already attracts tourists for its Himalayan setting, and this event adds a new dimension to the state’s profile. Crucially, the infrastructure built for this event will remain as a permanent base for winter sports training in India, creating lasting value beyond the tournament.

Over 11 Asian countries will compete in the tournament, bringing together the continent’s best short track speed skaters. The participation of powerhouses like China, Japan, and South Korea — who dominate this discipline globally — will provide Indian athletes with invaluable exposure to world-class competition.

This event represents a historic milestone for Indian sports. India has competed in the Winter Olympics since 1964 but has never hosted an international ice sports event of this scale. Athletes like Shiva Keshavan (luge) kept winter sports alive in India despite limited institutional support.
